Study of Gastric Bypass vs. Banding Has Mixed Results

In the first randomized trial in the United States that compares the country’s most popular bariatric procedures, gastric bypass was shown to produce 50% more excess weight loss over four years than gastric banding. But the dramatic weight loss associated with the bypass comes at the price of increased perioperative and late complications, more 30-day readmissions to hospital, and slower recovery from surgery at a higher cost.

Study Reveals Drop in Complications From Bariatric Surgery

In 2006, a lead researcher from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) provoked discussion by saying the 180-day complication rate for bariatric surgery was almost 40% in 2001-2002. Now the same AHRQ researcher has reviewed the numbers for 2005 and 2006 and found, surprisingly, the risk-adjusted rate has dropped by 21%, despite the fact that the procedures are being done more often on older and sicker patients.
